Chicken Ularthiyathu - Kerala Sauteed Chicken

Before you guys read any further let me admit that, this is the super quick method of making this traditional Kerala dish :) I love this so much that, I have been waiting to make this for my family. I enjoyed making this and hope it would be the same for you.

Ingredients

  1. Chicken Pieces - Medium size , 10 (skin off and with bones)
  2. Shallots / Small Onions - 20 (finely sliced)
  3. Ginger - Crushed - 2 Table spoons
  4. Garlic - Crushed - 1 Table spoon
  5. Green Chilly - Crushed - 1 Tea spoon
  6. Whole Spices - Clove, Cardamom - I used roasted powders - 1 table spoon each
  7. Salt to taste
  8. Coconut Oil - 2 Table spoon
  9. Curry Leaves - As much as you like
  10. Coconut Pieces - Cut in thin rectangular shapes - 10 small pieces.
  11. Turmeric Powder - 1 tea spoon.
  12. Coriander Powder - 1 table spoon
  13. Pepper Powder- 2 tea spoons.
  14. Red Chilly Powder - 1 tea spoon.

How to Make?

  1. Marinate chicken pieces with salt, whole spices, turmeric powder, coriander powder, pepper powder, red chilly powder and keep aside for 30 minutes.
  2. Take a Kadai and pour some oil. Now add coconut pieces and saute it well for about a minute.
  3. Add shallots , green chilly, ginger ,garlic , curry leaves and saute again .
  4. Now add marinated chicken pieces and saute well and add 1/4 cup of water.
  5. Close with a lid and wait for it to boil.
  6. Once it boils, simmer and cook it till pieces are well cooked and water content is emptied.
  7. Now, keep the Kadai open and conitnue to saute. Ensure that curry is not sticking to the bottom and switch off when the entire dish has dried up and you can see that the gravy has thickened up.
Note : If you want to add turmeric powder or chilly powder more then , add it at the step just before adding the marinated chicken pieces.

Enjoy with piping hot rice or Chappathi!
